Smithfield Hog Production Division
Headquartered in Laurinburg, North Carolina, the East-West Region of our Hog Production Division employs 515 people to help produce 1.3 million market head and 300,000 replacement gilts each year. The region has more than 98,000 sows (23% contract), 309,000 nursery spaces, 680,000 finishing spaces, 55 company production sites and 180 contract production sites. Within Richmond County there are 2400 sow spaces, 18,200 nursery spaces, and 8500 finishing spaces.
2015 was an award-winning year for the region, taking 2nd place in Environmental Excellence for the best recycling of a previous year's project as well as winning the 2015 Smithfield Innovation Award for implementing vacuum stack lifters to help reduce the physical stress of repetitive manual bag handling. It was also named the 2015 Business of the Year by the local Scotland County chamber of commerce.
Very active in community affairs, the region collected toys and raised $7,200 during its 2015 annual Christmas Cheer Program. Also active supporters of the military, the region's employees donated 104 shoeboxes full of daily necessities to U.S. troops stationed in Kosovo.
